This project aims to standardize the vocabulary used to describe coupler and buffer systems and related components in order to help contractors and/or stakeholders in the definition of products. It will not contain requirements for couplers and buffers. The terms and definitions reflect those used in numerous published International Standards. No technical requirements will be included, it will not overlap with the European project of Digital Automatic Coupler (DAC).
Coupler and buffer system are important parts connecting the vehicles and transferring longitudinal loads. To solve the following issues in the railway applications - coupler and buffer system, ISO standard related to terms and definitions is proposed.
Misunderstanding on the scope of concept related to coupler & buffer system and related components in different contexts.
Different meanings of same term in different regions or countries, leading to misunderstanding among suppliers, rolling stock builders, end users, and related stakeholders.
Collecting of existing items in several ISO and EN standards, for example EN 15551, EN 15020, EN 16019, etc. The structure of new proposal is compared with ISO 24478 Railway applications — Braking — General vocabulary, which collects terms and definitions used in numerous published International Standards.
The standard of the terms and definitions will benefit all the parties, reduce communication cost and time in the field of coupler and buffer system, and promote the technical exchange and integration, without affecting the technical development in case there was any for example the DAC in Europe.
