ISO/NP 25334-1 Sports facilities — Tennis — Part 1: Court surface and equipment

Scope

This document provides requirements and guidance for use relating to court surface and equipment with respective test methods and tolerance, used in tennis facilities.

Purpose

Tennis is one of the world’s most popular sports, by attracting participants from various age groups,
professional levels, and from all continents. According to the Global Tennis Report 2021 from the
International Tennis Federation (ITF), the current global participation in tennis has exceeded 87 million,
with women accounting for 41%. Meanwhile, the number of tennis courts worldwide has surpassed 578
thousand.
Specialized equipment, such as net post sockets, perimeter/backstop curtains, and fencing, are crucial
for the instalment and maintenance of tennis courts. Additionally, the selection of court surfaces is
essential for different tennis sports games. The current mainstream court surface materials include clay
courts, grass courts, and acrylic surfaces. Each surface type has its own physical and economic
characteristics. Therefore, it is in need to develop standards for testing and maintaining such facilities.
This has proven to be conducive to enhancing the enjoyment of tennis sports and improving
participation of interested parties to be involved in tennis activities on a larger scale, economically,
socially, and environmentally, to finally better contribute to the United Nations SDGs.
Currently, in the field of tennis sports, the ISO standards only has partial coverage in the study of tennis rackets. There is still considerable space remaining in this area.
Furthermore, in addition to the contents to be discussed in this document, many other topics, such as
the players, ball persons, referees and training systems and capacity building, are equally crucial for
the overall sustainable growth of the tennis sports in general. In future, such aspects will also be
investigated and considered to develop into series, e.g., ‘Part 2: Requirements for players, ball
persons, and referees’ and ‘Part 3: Guidance for training and capacity building’ etc.
