The digital cinema LED projection technology, based on active light-emitting display technology,
provides a new solution for digital cinema projection, with technical advantages such as high
luminance, high contrast ratio, high dynamic range, and high uniformity. It is a significant trend in the
development of international cinema projection technology. Due to the lack of unified LED auditoriums
optical standards in the international film industry, the optical quality of partial LED auditoriums are
uneven. As a result, the technical advantages of digital cinema LED projection cannot be adequately
realized, which erects a barrier to the promotion and application of digital cinema LED projection
technology.
At present, in spite of international standardization organizations, such as ISO, IEC, and ITU, have
released standardization documents related to LED projection technology, these documents mainly
target at LED display devices for general purposes and cannot be directly applied to meet the particular
requirements of high-quality viewing in digital cinema.
To solve the above problems, DCI has released documents such as Direct View Display D-Cinema
Addendum, Version 1.1, Digital Cinema System Specification V1.4.4, and Compliance Test Plan V1.4b.
These documents specify the optical technical requirements and measurement methods for digital
cinema LED display devices, which provides standardized support of underlying technology for the
application towards LED auditoriums. These documents specify the optical technical requirements and
measurement methods for digital cinema LED display device, which can provide basic references for
the application of digital cinema LED projection technology.
However, the optical effects of digital cinema LED auditoriums depends not only on digital cinema LED
display device, but also on the projection environment and actual installation status of digital cinema
LED auditoriums. Meanwhile, the documents released by DCI are not international standards. These
documents are not enough to regulate the optical indicators and improve the optical effects of LED
auditoriums worldwide, and yet to be effectively promote the progress and application of LED projection
technology worldwide.
Therefore, it is urgent to adapt to the development trend of the global digital cinema LED display
market within the scope of ISO/TC 36, widely adopt the technical contents of relevant standards and
specifications on the basis of the LED standardization documents issued by DCI, ISO/IEC and other
standardization organizations, and formulate a unified and standardized international standard for LED
cinemas in view of the overall requirements of applications towards LED auditoriums, so as to put
forward reasonable technical requirements for LED auditoriums and operational measurement methods
for the film industry around the world.
Compared with the projector and screen mode for digital film, the solutions of sound, digital cinema
distribution master (DCDM), and digital cinema packaging (DCP) for LED auditoriums are indeed
unique, and the corresponding international standards will be formulated after the solutions from
various countries develope further in the future.
China's proposal will establish an international standard for optical technology requirements and
measurement methods for digital cinema LED auditoriums. The formulation and establishment of
international standards for LED auditoriums optics have several advantages. Firstly, it provides
technical references for the research, development, manufacturing, and promotion of digital cinema
LED projection systems. Secondly, it gives technical guidance for the design, construction, renovation,
acceptance, and arbitration of the overall system of the digital cinema LED auditoriums. Thirdly, it is
conductive to improve the optical effects of digital cinema LED auditoriums, thus audience would obtain better viewing experience. As a result, it will promote the progress and application of digital cinema LED projection technology worldwide.
