PNW 21A-878 ED1 Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes - Safety requirements for secondary sodium ion cells and batteries for use in electrical energy storage systems

Scope

This document specifies the safety requirements and tests for secondary sodium cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems. Including terms and definitions, general safety, specific requirements, electrical safety requirements for battery systems, and corresponding test methods.

This document applies to secondary sodium cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems.Examples of appliances that are within the scope of this document are:

– telecommunications,

– central emergency lighting and alarm systems,

– stationary engine starting,

– photovoltaic systems,

– home (residential) energy storage systems (HESS),

– large energy storage : on-grid / off-grid.

Purpose

In recent years, the industrialization process of secondary sodium batteries has significantly accelerated. Many countries are vigorously developing or reserving secondary sodium battery technology and have made significant progress. In China alone, more than 30 sodium ion battery companies have developed related battery products and have been applied in fields such as power base station energy storage, electric bicycles, data centers, and low energy industrial forklifts. Electrical energy storage systems will be the largest application field of secondary sodium batteries. Deploying large-scale secondary sodium battery systems near densely populated urban power grids requires further elimination of the risk of fire and explosion. At present, there is no specific standard for safety assessment of secondary sodium cells and batteries used in electrical energy storage systems internationally. There is an urgent need to develop a relevant international standard - IEC XXXXX "Secondary cells and batteries containing alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes - Safety requirements for secondary sodium cells and batteries for use in electrical energy storage systems". The establishment and implementation of safety related standards will effectively promote the improvement of the safety assessment of secondary sodium cells and batteries for power energy storage, and provide safety guidance for the storage, transportation, and use of secondary sodium cells and batteries to ensure that products effectively meet safety requirements.

This project is not a horizontal project, and meets the requirements of safety (Guideline 104). It does not involve EMC (Guideline 107), environment (Guideline 109), and quality assurance (Guideline 102).
