This includes sphere (ball) provers and piston provers operating in unidirectional and bidirectional forms. It also includes provers operated as conventional, reduced volume, and small volume operational modes.
The guidance document describes the calibration methods, installation and use of pipe provers of each type.
The interaction between a pipe prover and different types of flowmeters is described. The calculations used to derive the volumes of liquid. (Annex A).
The expected acceptance criteria for fiscal and custody transfer applications as guidance for both the calibration of the prover and the expectation when proving flowmeters (Annex C)
The document covers the use of pipe, provers for crude oils and light hydrocarbon products which are liquid at ambient conditions. The principles apply across a wider range of liquids. This includes chilled and cryogenic products however use with these products may require additional guidance.
The current ISO 7278-2 and ISO 7278-4 have become increasingly dated as regards current industry practices and the additional ISO 7278-5 was never completed and published. As the two standards current standards are complementary and contain overlap in methods calculations and limitations, it is considered advantageous to combine them and include the contents from the unfinished part 5. This approach was taken by the Energy Institute (EI) when revising their complementary standards HM10 and HM12. This draft combined EI document has been provide to the ISO working group to allow the development of a joint single standard covering all aspects of pipe prover design, calibration and use.
To keep numbering simple, replacing ISO 7278-2 and withdrawing ISO 7278-4 with this revision will ensure a single standard covers all aspects of pipe prover in a single standard.
A third working draft of the standard is currently being commented by a project group leading to the preparation of a ISO CD.
