IEC 18/1821/NP Electrical installations in ships – Primary DC distribution, system design architecture

Scope

This international standard specifies the requirements of primary low voltage DC distribution systems and interconnected installations. This standard is a supplement to IEC 60092 and gives the additional requirements that are specific for DC power supply grids.

The use of primary DC distribution is typically characterized by:

– DC low-voltages applicable up to and including 1500 V,

– DC-grids including various sources of power and consumers with power electronic controllers forming operational interfaces, with high dynamics,

– fast response times and small reaction times in DC-grid systems compared to conventional AC-grid systems,

– overvoltage and high peak current due to low impedances and capacitors presences,

– converters which will create special fault mitigation scenarios by their ability to block or limit the current. The requirements of this standard establish general principles for:

– existing and new power generating units, new DC distribution concepts for electrical power, energy storage and advanced control of a total power balance, including semiconductor converters (AC to DC, DC to DC and DC to AC power converters) and dynamic load controllers,

– relevant system studies and calculations demonstrating a protection philosophy as needed for necessary selectivity, segregation methods and equipment selection,

– demonstrating an equivalent level of operability, maintenance and safety comparable to AC systems.

This standard also gives guidelines for integration of energy sources of different nature and suitable locations of such installations.

Purpose

The SMB has decided to cancel on 2023-06-30, all projects not reaching approval stage within 5 years. Therefore the current project IEC 63108 needs to be cancelled and a new project opened. This will have no impact on the practical work of WG 33.
