CEN/TC 444 - WI 444044 Characterization of waste — Determination of the content of elements and substances in waste

Scope

This Standard can be applied to all waste samples with unknown or partially known composition. It is specified the minimum laboratory methods and performance requirements for analysis of laboratory samples of liquid and solid waste to determine the inorganic elements and organic substances content of waste up to a cumulated mass of at least 90 % or a close and highest possible mass.

In case of information on the origin or on the composition of waste, given by the owner of waste, only part of this method can be lead (this method can be used to complete the knowledge on waste only).

Purpose

Wastes may contain a mixture of substances with potential hazards. An exhaustive knowledge of the composition of waste in terms of elements and substances is not yet usually realized when no information exists on the wastes. This could be needed to compute their hazard. The results of the protocol can be used for application of different regulations (2012/18/EU Seveso Directive, 2008/98/EC Waste Framework Directive…), with the intent to ensure reliable and comparable results when using the reference methods.

The existence of an European standard would allow to have one tools adapted to the European regulation texts.
