Standards Development
This Standard specifies recommendations and requirements for the provision of organised and packaged tourist trips in which the main purpose is to work as a volunteer in order to meet the needs of the customer (the volunteer) and the destination stakeholder (host community).
It is the intention that compliance with the Standard will improve sector performance, increase benefits to host communities and raise consumer awareness of and increased confidence in volunteer tourism.
This Standard does not apply to International Development Organisations using volunteers or to volunteers giving service for over one year. It also does not apply to "portals" where a volunteer operates in an individual capacity.
It is understood that all national legal obligations especially related to health, risk, consumers and employees are to be fulfilled by the volunteer tourism organisation
Under the direction of SVS/2/5, this subcommittee is responsible for the drafting of British Standard BS XXXX Volunteer Tourism.
